On Tuesday, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed and UK High
Commissioner Christian Turner met in Islamabad and struck an
agreement.
·
Bilateral agreements, according to
both parties, would promote bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
·
Rashid remarked that Pakistan and
the United Kingdom have long-standing links and that "our relations are
extremely important to us." He added that Pakistanis living in the UK were
also helpful in promoting bilateral relations.
·
The British high commissioner also
praised the two countries' "friendly and multi-faceted partnership."
Pakistan's support in the evacuation of foreigners and Afghan civilians from
Kabul was also welcomed.
·
The decision on the extradition pact
between Pakistan and the United Kingdom came a day after the federal cabinet's
special ministerial committee met in Islamabad.
·
The committee determined at the
meeting that the deal would be signed in the public's best interest. It was
also determined that before bringing the agreement to the federal cabinet for
final approval, the British authorities would be consulted again.
·
Pakistan
and the United Kingdom would
be able to repatriate their convicted offenders under the terms of the
agreement. However, it will only enable individuals who have been punished by
competent courts to return home.
·
The meeting was led by Interior
Minister Rashid and attended by Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Human
Rights Minister Shireen Mazari, and Interior and Accountability Advisor Shahzad
Akbar.
·
In October of this year, the two
nations had their first round of talks on a criminal extradition pact.
·
Later that month, Interior Minister
Rashid met with British High Commissioner Turner to discuss the repatriation of
former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who has been residing in
London since his medical parole in 2019.
